The sex industry has always been characterized by technological innovation, but how has technology changed it? Dr Yaela Lahav-Raz researched how the Internet has enabled sex industry clients to create a supportive community while ranking women performances. The ranking system gained criticism among the public, which affected the new law criminalizing clients; and the unionization of sex workers.
Now that sex robots are on the rise, radical feminists and sex workers alike are in a rare consensus against the phenomenon but for entirely different reasons. It's a story about the tensions between intimacy, community and economy, in the gap between online and offline.
